The catalyst for the village’s revival since 2010, is what is often referred to, ‘as the example to follow.” The Merchants House in Old Perithia is the flagship project that the archaeological dept. mention in terms of the best of historically accurate restorations on the island, as do many engineers and architects of Corfu.
Three ruins that, in 2011, were meticulously reconstructed, 99% as they had been centuries before. Of Venetian architectural importance, they were lovingly restored by an Anglo-Dutch couple, reflecting the history and practically forgotten past of the village. Supported by the Archaeological Dept. of the Ionian Islands. Now, and under new ownership, they retain all of the features and original features, both internally and externally, that were created by hand, exactly as they were when the project was completed some 14 years ago.
Visitors can see the exterior of the property, unless they stay as guests, and the impact it had on reviving and saving the village, ‘Corfu’s oldest’ which went from 15% restored and in decline in 2010 to over 38% restored today (as of 2025 with 4 tavernas, 2 shops and a beekeeper on the far side as well as further and ongoing restorations and care of land), having returned to life as a popular attraction and significant example of the old mountain villages. Old Perithia being one of the wealthiest of its time.
